Beach Scrum in Ukraine’s Rugby Capital
Lviv has had had a reputation as Ukraine’s unofficial rugby capital ever since its Soviet-era team rose to glory. June saw another rugby first for West Ukraine when the city played host to an international beach rugby tournament featuring teams from Lviv, Kyiv, Rivne, Ivano-Frankivsk and Kryviy Rig along with their Polish colleagues from Pogon Rugby Club in Sideltse. Lviv’s very own Sokil team ran out winners in the men’s category, while Kriviy Rig’s Victoria team took the ladies title in some style. Lviv region Rugby Federation chief Petro Adamyk commented that it is his dream to put together a women’s side in Lviv which could play to the standard of the Kriviy Rig ladies. “This is the first time we’ve seen as tournament of this quality and at this level in West Ukraine,” commented Sokil manager Yuriy Grabovsky.
