American Culture Season in Lviv, October 4—11, venues across the city

This October will see Americana showcased in all its glory throughout a week of cultural events as part of Lviv’s first ever ‘Days of American Culture’ festival. This project, which is being supported by the US Embassy in Ukraine along with the Pidhirsci Castle Fund, will feature a concert from American blues musician Melvin Taylor and a host of literary evenings and performances by visiting American artists.

This September one of Lviv’s most famous nightlife venues will continue its recent jazz tradition with a concert from Anglo-Polish funk threesome The Groove Syndicate (Szymon Fortuna (Poland) Geoff Bartholomew and Rob Paterson (UK).

Okimono: for the first time in Eastern Europe, Exhibition of Japanese sculpture, September 17—November 9, Pototsky Palace (Kopernika Str,15)

This September Lviv’s National Art Gallery together with the Feldman Collection will present a rare autumn treat for fans of oriental art: an exhibition of exquisite Japanese carvings and sculptures. For more than a month Pototsky Palace will host some of the most striking pieces from Olexander Feldman’s collection, which features a total of 220 okimono items.

16th Annual International Avant-Garde Music Festival “Contrasts”, 25 September — 5 October, Lviv Philharmonic Society Theatre (7, Chaikovsky Str., Lviv)

The ‘Contrasts’ International Modern Music Festival is a unique musical event which offers true aesthetic pleasure for connoisseurs of both the more traditional classics and modern music. This festival has been taking place in Lviv since 1995 and has already established its own traditions.

Manhattan Short Film Festival screenings, September 30 —October 3, Lviv Art Palace (Kopernika Str., 17)

An extraordinary global event will take place from September 30 to October 3 as over 100,000 people in more than 200 cities across six continents gather in cinemas, galleries, museums and cafes for one purpose: to view and vote on the finalist movies in the annual Manhattan Short Film Festival. Results of global voting will be announced on October 3 in New York.

Golden Lion International Theatre Festival, 1—7 October, theatres across the city

The annual Golden Lion festival is not just a carnival but a European theatrical tradition in its own right. It is also one of the most prestigious forums which modern Ukraine has established in international cultural circles. It was founded back in 1989 and has since been transforming the streets of Lviv into a theatre every October, providing vivid impressions and creating a true carnival atmosphere.

The arrival of September and new academic year in Lviv also means the appearance of the city’s annual literary festival. Lviv has long been seen as the spiritual home of the Ukrainian language, and so it is no surprise that since the country achieved independence in 1991 the city has become a bastion of the Ukrainian language publishing industry.
