Celebrity all-stars to take on Lviv’s Karpaty veterans
Maestro Ukrainian All-Stars vs. Karpaty Lviv veterans, May 10, Ukraina stadium. Kick-off time to be confirmed. The match will be followed by a live concert the following evening featuring many of the game’s participants Legend has it that Lviv was the scene of Ukraine’s first ever official football match, when a local side beat their Polish rivals from Krakow in the late nineteenth century. Ever since then, the city has laid claim to the country’s footballing soul, despite never producing a local side that was able to sustain a challenge for the top honours in either Soviet or, more recently, the Ukrainian league. This fun event is part of efforts to boost the profile of football in Lviv and generate much needed momentum behind the city’s push to play a key role in Euro 2012. With its Polish heritage and European pretensions, Lviv is perfectly placed to serve as both the geographical and emotional nerve centre of the whole Euro 2012 experience, and so we can expect the number of football-related events taking place in the city to spiral in the coming months. Ukrainian celebrities participating in this match will include members of the boy band Aviator, ТНМК showman Yuriy Kit, the lads from 4 Kings, and the Druga Rika boys. In other words, the event promises to be an autograph-hunter’s paradise. Unfortunately, that doesn’t necessarily mean that these celebs can actually play football, so fans of the beautiful game may well be advised to proceed with caution.
