Batyar’s Day (“Rogue’s Day”), Rynok Square, 1 May from noon onwards
The concept of “Batyarstvo” (an idle and debauched style of living which might be considered close to the English concepts of roguery and caddishness) is part of Lviv folklore. The Batyars of Lviv are a very specific breed of man who pride themselves on having their own vocabulary, codes of honour and lifestyles. The heyday of the Batyars is thought to have been the late years of the Victorian era when Lviv prospered as the lavishly modernising eastern capital of the Habsburg Empire. Few authentic Batyars are thought to remain, but modern-day Leopolitans who wish to honour these traditional Lviv icons can gather on Rynok Square and enjoy blowing the froth off a few fresh beers and admiring the city street life this 1 May.
