Outstanding Ukrainian boxing team wins one quarter of nation’s London 2012 medals Ukraine did not produce any of the major stars of the London 2012 Olympic Games, but nevertheless the nation’s sportsmen and women did manage to finish in a respectable fourteenth position overall, winning a total of twenty medals. The stand-out performers of Ukraine’s London 2012 team were undoubtedly the nation’s Olympic boxers, who won five medals in total – or in other words, 25% of Ukraine’s entire 2012 Olympic medal haul. This impressive display earned Ukraine’s boxing squad a second place finish in the Olympic boxing medals table, marginally behind host nation Great Britain.

The Summer Olympic Games are an international event, occurring every four years, organized by the International Olympic Committee. Medals are awarded in each event, with gold medals for first place, silver for second and bronze for third, a tradition that started in 1904. The modern Olympic Games were founded in 1894 when Pierre Fredy, Baron de Coubertin sought to promote international understanding through sporting competition. The 1896 Summer Olympics, officially known as the Games of the I Olympiad, was an international multi-sport event which was celebrated in Athens, Greece, from April 6 to April 15, 1896. It was the first Olympic Games held in the Modern era. Ancient Greece was the birthplace of the Olympic Games, consequently Athens was perceived to be an appropriate choice to stage the inaugural modern Games.

On 18-20 November, Shuvar-Expo centre hosted a new event celebrating all things muscular. Festival “Strength of the Nation” saw Ukraine’s strongest people compete in arm wrestling, power lifting, heavy athletics and bodybuilding events.

The Ukrainian national football team were triumphant in the first match played at the newly-opened Lviv Arena on November 15, beating Austria 2-1 in an action packed international friendly.

September saw the Golden Autumn International Archery Tournament, which has been held in Lviv for over 48 years! Over 200 archers competed from Belarus, Kazakhstan, Poland, Romania, Russia, Spain and Ukraine.

Western Ukraine’s first professional ice hockey club was formed in Lviv on September 13th. Levy or ‘Lions’ already plans to enter the Ukrainian Professional Ice Hockey League this year.
