Just One Step Shy of Victory

It was one step short for Lviv’s Anna Muzychuk at the FIDE Women’s World Chess Championship in Tehran, Iran last month, as the talented Leopolitan player fell in a dramatic tiebreaker in the final to just miss out on following in her sister’s footsteps as world champion. Several top players skipped the knock-out tournament, including the reigning world champion and top ranked female player Hou Yifan. Yifan won her title by defeating Anna’s sister Mariya last year in Lviv and refused to participate at the event due to dissatisfaction with the FIDE world championship system. Mariya – the 2015 women’s world champion – and current US women’s champion Nazi Paikidze also refused to attend out of protest of the tournament’s location in Iran, where it is mandatory for women to wear a hijab in public.

Lviv – Leader 2017 Sport Dance Competition

Lviv’s Halychyna Sport Complex played host to the Lviv – Leader 2017 Ukrainian Sport Dance Championship on February 25-26. The 20-year event is now on the official calendar of the World Dance Sport Federation. The city’s Leader Modern Dance Club brought together 300 dance couples from around Ukraine – as well as dancers from Portugal, Turkey, Estonia, and Poland – for this spectacular show and popular celebration of dance.

The top two teams in Ukraine’s Volleyball Super League faced each other on February 3-4 when Lokomotiv Kharkiv took on Lviv’s first-place Barkom-Kazhany. Lviv’s team leads the standings with 62 points from 22 matches, while Kharkiv sits in second with 53 points.

Ukraine’s Winter Cycling Championship

Lviv played host to the Ukraine Winter Cycling Championships from January 30th to February 2nd. The event featured more than 250 cyclists of several different ages competing in individual and team races in different qualification groups.

Lviv Trophy 2017

The IIHF-standard Novoyavorivsk Ice Palace, located just outside of Lviv, played host to the Lviv Region Open Cup figure skating Lviv Trophy 2017 competition on January 27th-28th. The event attracted over 300 skaters from 11 regions of Ukraine, as well as athletes from Belarus and Moldova.

Fencers Ksenia Panteleyeva and Anfisa Pochkalova and judoka Stanislav Goruna take home National Olympic Committee honours as the best athletes in the Lviv region. The National Olympic Committee of the Lviv Region selected its athletes of the month for January 2017 and November 2016 recently. The talented recipients include judoka Stanislav Goruna and fencers Ksenia Panteleyeva and Anfisa Pochkalova.

Lviv’s Carpathians Host Para Nordic World Cup Event

Recently added as a World Cup venue, Lviv region’s Western Rehabilitation & Sports Centre in the beautiful Carpathian Mountains hosted the World Para Nordic Skiing & Biathlon Championships from January 12-20. The event brought together over 120 participants from 19 countries from as far away as Brazil, China, the UK, Japan, and Norway.
