Ukraine 1st at European Shooting Championship in Baku

No country in Europe could top Ukraine’s shooting team at the European Shooting Championships this summer in Baku, Azerbaijan. The Ukrainian team topped 42 other countries and 932 athletes by winning 10 gold, 8 silver, and 4 bronze medals. The competition saw 79 sets of medals awarded in 25m, 50m, 300m, rifle and pistol, and Shotgun and Running Target events.

Lviv Cup 2017 Dragon Boats

Navaria Lake, located just outside Lviv, played host to the Lviv Cup National Dragon Boat competition on 22 July. Over 300 participants from across Ukraine competed in mixed and open races at the distances of 200m and 2000m. The races served as preparation for the upcoming European Championships to be held in Italy in September and drew some fine teams, including Kyiv’s Mala Flotylia, Rivne’s Zakhidyi Viter, Dubno’s Hetman, Poltava’s Dragon, and Lviv’s-own Otaman.

While our beloved Karpaty struggles to avoid relegation to Ukraine’s First Division, Leopolitan football fans and guests of the city that are starving for some quality international action are once again in luck. One year after Shakhtar Donetsk abandoned the city after going undefeated at Arena Lviv in the calendar year 2016, another team affected by the conflict in the East has decided to call Arena Lviv home.

Lviv’s Halychanka Capture Ukrainian Handball Super Cup

Lviv’s powerhouse Halychanka women’s handball team picked up the new season right where they left last year – as winners. The Halychanka knocked off Kherson’s Dnipryanka 34-23 on 5 September at Lviv’s Halychyna Sports Palace in the second women’s league Super Cup. Last season the home town squad also defeated Kherson, by a score of 44-23.

Athletes of the Month: July & August

Lviv’s karate superstar Stanislav Horuna was named Lviv’s Athlete of the Month for the second time this year (January & July) after claiming World Games gold in Wroclaw, Poland and becoming the sport’s first Ukrainian champion. The World Games is an Olympic-sanctioned multi-sport event for sports that are not included in the Olympic program, such as billiards, lacrosse, and karate.

Lviv’s Pavlo Korostylov confirmed his place as one of the most promising up-and-coming pistol shooters in the world after winning five medals

Masters-Bet EUROFANZ 2017

Lviv held the Masters-Bet EUROFANZ festival for football supporters from different countries for the 11th straight year from 29 June to 2 July. Teams of supporters from 24 different national teams and many other club teams came to Lviv to participate in a football tournament, donate gifts to charitable organisations, and to get to know one another.

Lviv’s Dynamo water polo team won the silver medal in the Ukrainian Super League Water Polo Championship on 18 June.

Ukraine Claims Historic Gold in European League Volleyball

Ukraine won the 2017 CEV Volleyball European League championship by knocking off powerhouse FYR Macedonia 3-1 in the gold medal match in the Danish city of Gentofte last month. Coach Ugis Krastins’ team made their first appearance in the competition this season and proved too much for FYR Macedonia, who were playing in their third straight European League final.
