Following on from the success of local legend Andrey Kotelnik’s September world title defence in front of a home audience, Lviv hosted another top-drawer boxing occasion October 23 with Lviv fighter Viktor Plotnikov taking the little-known GBU (Global Boxing Union) world welterweight belt from Venezuela’s Dervin Medina. Organised by Ukraine’s National boxing League, the main event was over almost as soon as it had begun, with Plotikov delighting the partisan Lviv crowd with a series of devastating assaults that left the Venuzeulan repeatedly on the canvas and gave the Polish referee no choice but to end the fight inside the first round. Expect plenty more boxing action this winter as fight fever grips the city.
