An exhibition dedicated to Ukraine’s national bard Taras Shevchenko opened at Lviv’s Art Palace opened March 3 featuring rare works of art produced by the famed former slave during his period of political exile in Tsarist Kazakhstan. For the first time in Ukrainian history guests were able to enjoy original artworks by Taras Shevchenko which had been kindly loaned by the Astana Art Museum in Kazakhstan. Although Shevchenko is best known for his haunting verse beseeching the Ukrainian people to rise up against their oppressors, he was also a sublime artist whose works have yet to receive the recognition they deserve. Kazakhstan’s ambassador to Ukraine Amangeldy Zhumabaev and Galina Masluk, the stylish Honorary Consul of Kazakhstan in West Ukraine, were joined at the official opening ceremony by Lviv Oblast Governor Mykola Kmit and a host of local cultural figures.
