International jazz in Ukraine’s bohemian capital
This year’s Jazz Bez music festival brought a wide range of international artists to Lviv as the city reaffirmed its reputation as the Prague of the Soviet world and the best place in the former USSR with the kind of improvisational ambience to pull off an event of this scale and nature. Highlights included a curtain-raiser from Borderland’s Mariana Sadovska and her band, while other treats were Egypt’s Hot Potato, the Thuillier Trio from France and Russia’s very own Witness of Fusion. Fans of Lviv jazz should check out the city’s growing Jazz Club which meets every Thursday evening at Kvartyra 35, which is located on the second floor of the Dzyga Arts and Culture Centre on Armenian Street.
